Corrections Policy
How to request a correction and how 1887 First fixes the record.
1887 First wants its reporting to be accurate, fair, and trustworthy. When we make a meaningful mistake, we will correct the record. We welcome specific, evidence-based correction requests from readers, sources, subjects, and community members.
What we correct
We review potential errors involving:
- Names, dates, titles, locations, quotations, statistics, links, and captions
- Material omissions that create a misleading impression
- Misidentification of people, organizations, documents, images, or events
- Incorrect descriptions of public records, legal proceedings, policies, or votes
- Statements presented as fact that are unsupported or inaccurate
- Material transcription, translation, production, or editing errors
A disagreement with a conclusion, criticism, analysis, or opinion is not automatically a factual error. However, factual claims within analysis and opinion remain subject to correction.
Types of updates
Silent fix
We may correct spelling, punctuation, formatting, broken links, or other minor issues that do not change the substance of a story without adding a correction note.
Clarification
We may clarify language that was factually accurate but incomplete, confusing, or reasonably open to a materially incorrect interpretation. Material clarifications are noted on the article.
Correction
When a factual error changes or could affect a reader's understanding, we update the article and add a dated correction note explaining what was wrong and what has been corrected.
Editor's note
We may add an editor's note when an issue requires broader context, when questions about a story are still being reviewed, or when the reporting process itself should be explained.
Retraction
Retraction is reserved for exceptional cases in which the central premise of a story cannot be supported, the reporting is fundamentally unreliable, or publication should not have occurred. When feasible, the original URL will remain available with a retraction notice so the public record is not silently erased.
How to request a correction
Use the correction form below, or call 888-339-1887 if you need help submitting a request.
Please include:
- Your name and contact information
- The headline and URL of the story
- The exact statement or material you believe is incorrect
- Why it is incorrect
- Supporting documents, links, recordings, or other evidence
- The correction you believe should be made
- Your relationship to the issue, if relevant
What happens after submission
- We acknowledge receipt when valid contact information is provided.
- An editor reviews the published material, notes, recordings, documents, and supporting evidence available.
- We may contact the requester, reporter, sources, or other knowledgeable parties.
- We determine whether a correction, clarification, update, editor's note, retraction, or no change is appropriate.
- We communicate the decision when practical.
We aim to respond to well-supported requests within 10 business days, but complex reporting, legal issues, public-record delays, or unavailable sources may require more time. Urgent errors involving safety, identity, or significant reputational harm receive priority.
How corrections appear
Material correction notes should:
- Appear on the affected article
- State what was incorrect
- State the correct information
- Show the date of the correction
- Avoid vague language that hides the nature of the error
When a material error was repeated in a newsletter or social post, we may correct or update those channels when practical.
Removal requests
We do not ordinarily remove accurate published work solely because it later becomes inconvenient, embarrassing, or unfavorable. We may consider limited redaction, de-indexing, updating, or removal when there is a compelling safety, privacy, legal, or fairness reason. Decisions are made case by case and do not erase lawfully maintained internal records.
